SFUSD’s LGBTQ+ Student Services program is the oldest program of its kind in the world. It has been innovating and setting the standard for whole student support for more than 35 years! Responsibility for the many district-wide initiatives required to support San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ students comes down to one individual.

There’s a thin bit of cord that surrounds a smattering of tents and people, older and younger alike, while the sound of hammers pounding tent nails rings in the air. A soccer ball goes back and forth between campers wearing keffiyehs and a Palestinian flag whips in the evening wind.

Just over 300 high school students from 30 schools around the Bay Area traveled to Sacramento to meet with legislators about gun violence and common-sense gun laws. The students are part of a group called Bay Area Student Activists, or BAStA
