You don’t need to be a fan of Guy’s TV shows or a former regular at Tex Wasabi’s (RIP) or even one of his three-and-a half million Twitter followers to admire the fact that when there were fires in our community, Guy went and fed evacuated folks. And three months ago, when restaurants all closed, Guy went and raised $22 million dollars to just give to restaurant employees. I was ready to write a “Be nice to Guy, he’s doing good work” piece based on that alone, but an hour of Googling this man led me to a different thesis: Guy Fieri is a goddamn inspiration.

We’re fewer than five months away from a presidential election, three months into lockdown to limit the spread of coronavirus, and weeks into protesting the killing of George Floyd by a now-former police officer, which all adds up to a perfect storm for misinformation.

Back in November 2019, my wife Joyce and I decided to go to Palawan, her home island in the Philippines, to have our daughter Valley. I’m a professional musician, so I came back to California for most of February to play shows and make as much money as I could before returning to finish the process of getting Valley’s American Passport and bringing them home.

For about half an hour, car after car after car after car after car drove by me, waving, honking, flashing peace signs, or pumping their fists in the air, with all the energy of a people starting an exciting new journey.

I was talking with one of my neighbors, who worked as a librarian till COVID 19 shut the libraries. The City assigned him to be a residential shift manager at a quarantine hotel for at risk homeless people. We talked about all the skills he was developing at this new job that he been thrown into after undergoing some quick online trainings.
