Berkeley Curiosity Shop, The Bone Room, Is Closing its Doors
I’m all for evolution but in the grand scheme of things I would be pretty happy with a more sloth-like pace. It was this reality that I was made to deal with when The Bone Room announced yesterday via Facebook that on June 1, 2016 they will be shuttering the doors of their brick-and-mortar oddity shop on Solano Avenue to focus on their online store, pop-up shops, and special events.
While this isn’t the final swan song for the Bone Room, it does signal the end of an era. I will miss going there and opening drawers of rainbow colored bugs, poking through their shelves, and talking with their strange and knowledgeable staff. I was working myself up into an acute state of agitation when Bone Room employee, Victoria Vice, sat me down and explained “It’s a natural history store, so I guess if you look at it as evolution, it’s not so bad. We’re losing our tail, but like gaining bipedal-ism.” Suddenly things seemed less bleak, and I began to see that perhaps change isn’t so bad… With that, Bone Room, I look forward to seeing your new manifestation and look forward to being further weirded out, but I will sincerely miss your physical location.

I’m going to be the pedant who points out that The Bone Room is located in the heart of Albany and not Berkeley. Albany is a different city with a different microculture and we shouldn’t wipe it off the map in the quest for a more recognizable headline.
With that said, The Bone Room gave a lot of joy and inspiration to the weird kid I was in the 90s. Solano ave is a little bit duller for it’s absence. Thanks for the affectionate send-off.
It’s just over the Albany line, technically in Berkeley. It will be missed. Such a great place to browse and buy butterflies and bones, of course, sad day.
Agree. It is Albany.
You are correct, not Berkeley. I love them too. I will be DJing a Bone Room event April 1 if you check out their FB page for details.
