Rookie SFPD Officer Drunk Drives, Crashes Car, Injures Five

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

I imagine when cops drive drunk, they probably think to themselves, “who’s going to pull me over? The police? I am the police!” precisely as their car gets permanently pulled over by a light pole.

This is precisely what happened in San Francisco’s Outer Sunset on Saturday morning. Except the cop didn’t only hit a light pole. He also managed to take out a car filled with people, making the situation significantly worse.

The rookie officer had just graduated from the police academy a day prior to the incident, and was likely celebrating being above the law while being over the limit. The crash occurred on Sunset Boulevard between Rivera and Santiago street. This wasn’t a small fender bender, as one of the passengers was left critically injured from the incident.

Shortly after the crash, photographs appeared on social media, showing both cars had been completely totalled.

The rookie cop in question is Ryan Chung-Yan Kwong and was booked on DUI charges shortly after first responders arrived. Mayor Daniel Lurie took to social media to condemn the actions of the rookie officer. The crash happened less than a week after Lurie announced a massive boost to SFPD ranks “without compromising standards.”

It’s hard to understand how that will happen when there are also suggestions to make the police academy shorter from its current 9 months, to a significantly shorter 6 month duration.

Five people in total were injured, including the officer in the crash. One of the victims has life threatening injuries.

Prior to the crash, photos surfaced on Kwong’s social media depicting him posing in front of sports cars with bottles of Hennessy. The photos have since been deleted. You gotta give it to him, he’s only been a cop one day, and he’s already trying to hide evidence. They grow up so fast, don’t they?
