Update: SFUSD Releases Names of 13 Schools Set to Potentially Close
UPDATE: The Chronicle reports the list of schools facing closure are:
Elementary Schools:
- Yick Wo on Russian Hill would close, with students assigned to Redding and Sherman elementary schools.
- El Dorado in Visitacion Valley would close and merge with Visitacion Valley Elementary.
- Harvey Milk in the Castro would close and merge with Sanchez Elementary.
- Parker in North Beach would close, with students assigned to Lau for the Chinese biliteracy program or Chin Elementary for general education.
- Malcolm X in Hunters Point would close and merge with Carver Elementary.
- San Francisco Community School in the Excelsior would close and merge with Revere, both currently K-8 sites.
- San Francisco Public Montessori in Pacific Heights would close and merge with Rosa Parks Elementary.
- Spring Valley on Nob Hill would close and merge with John Muir Elementary.
- Sutro in the Inner Richmond would close, with students assigned to Lafayette, Alamo or the Chinese Immersion School for the Cantonese biliteracy program.
High Schools:
- June Jordan School for Equity in the Excelsior would close and merge with O’Connell High.
- The Academy in Diamond Heights would close and merge with Wallenberg High.
UPDATE: According to sources obtained by Mission Local, Superintendent Matt Wayne will release the names of 13 schools scheduled to close or potentially be merged with other facilities.
After a news report hinted that the much-anticipated list of San Francisco public schools set to close might be delayed again, the district hasn’t cleared things up, leaving families and staff feeling even more anxious.
Last Friday, Mission Local said that several sources mentioned district leaders were planning to push the announcement until after the November election. If that’s true, it would be the second time this decision has been postponed during what’s already been a chaotic school year for the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD). As of Monday, the district still hadn’t confirmed whether a delay was happening or not.
Back in September, just two days before the list was first expected, Superintendent Matt Wayne announced he was pushing the date to October, saying they needed more time to review the plan. That week was a bit of a mess, with the former school board president, Lainie Motamedi, criticizing Wayne’s leadership, an emergency weekend meeting being called, and Mayor London Breed stepping in to assign a team to help with the school consolidation plan, which the district calls the Resource Alignment Initiative.
Wayne recently confirmed that they still planned to release the list this month, but since Friday’s report, SFUSD hasn’t confirmed if that’s still the case. According to SFUSD’s communications officer, Laura Dudnick, an update will be shared in October, but she didn’t specify if the list of school names would be part of it. When asked directly, she didn’t give any further details and just mentioned that they’re finalizing things and will keep the community posted.
