The Sonder Project Celebrates 10 Years w/ Mamajowali Live at The Freight in Berkeley

The Sonder Project is proud to mark 10 years of impact with an unforgettable evening of music, movement, and meaning. On Wednesday, August 27th, join us at The Freight in Berkeley for our 10th Anniversary Benefit Concert featuring Mamajowali—a powerhouse trio uniting the deep musical traditions of West Africa with Americana soul and boundary-defying improvisation.
This special night honors 10 years of transformational work by The Sonder Project, a nonprofit organization empowering communities in Sub-Saharan Africa through clean water, education, and sustainable agriculture. All proceeds from the event will support the organization’s continued mission to create sustainable solutions in partnership with rural communities in Burkina Faso and Malawi.
Mamajowali features three celebrated musicians:

- Joe Craven, a genre-hopping multi-instrumentalist who’s performed with
Jerry Garcia and David Grisman. - Mamadou Sidibe, a Malian kamale ngoni pioneer who helped evolve
traditional West African music. - Walter Strauss, a fingerstyle guitar innovator acclaimed for his kora-
inspired compositions.
Together, they deliver “Afromericana”—a genre-defying fusion of rhythm, culture, and soul that’s sure to get audiences on their feet. And yes—the dance floor will be open! Preview their sound at mamajowali.bandcamp.com.
Guests will enjoy live music, dancing, stories of impact, a silent auction, and refreshments —including beer and wine from our proud sponsors Red Car Wine and Lagunitas Brewing Company—available for purchase. All ages are welcome.
The Sonder Project is currently welcoming additional event sponsors and silent auction contributions. Interested partners may contact info@thesonderproject.org to get involved.
