Kiss Off
by Vanessa Gil, Arts & Events Editor

I will FINALLY get to cross a band off my live show bucket list this week. I’m going to see Violent Femmes in Napa this weekend! So stoked. Also going on this week, two of my old KCBS co-workers, Stan Bunger and Doug Sovern, will be having a discussion at the Mechanics’ Institute about Stan’s book “Mornings with Madden: My Radio Life with an American Legend”. True story, one time Stan and Madden had an on-air discussion about whether or not I should have saved my Brandon Crawford 2nd round fantasy baseball draft pick for a later round that season. Stan is also the guy who gave me a pair of his season tickets to a game he was unable to attend. Thanks to him and those tickets, I got to see Matt Cain’s perfect game in person. Good memories! Congrats to Stan on his book. Here’s what else I’m excited for the week of 7/8 and beyond.

But it’s the ever-evolving relationships between her closest friends and bandmates that has propelled the Hudson Valley-based artist onto her new album And Southern Star––a truly collaborative effort that ruminates on the choices we make, and the people we always come back to. Navigating the periphery of past selves, the coexistence of isolation and excitement in a new environment and the tension of growing away from what we thought we wanted is tackled with a luscious, kaleidoscopic grace. And Southern Star picks apart the reflection we used to recognize, while trying to build a new one.

In the history of the Hip-Hop, few artists have had as great an impact on the development and progression of the art forms lyrical style as Rakim Allah. Universally referenced as one of the Masters of the Microphone and an influence and inspiration to his peers and followers alike, Rakim first exploded onto the scene with the release of iconic Eric B. is President in 1986 with longtime collaborator Eric B. The single marked a turning point in the Rap world – raising the bar for future emcees and revolutionizing the way rhymes are delivered to this day. No serious discussion of the music’s greatest performers is held without a deferential accounting of his achievements, and no serious rap artist grips a microphone without channeling some of his legend. Rakim’s intricately intellectual lyrics draw their force from his worldly experience, inner faith and progressive contemplation; his liquid and seemingly effortless delivery – often imitated but still unrivaled – from a fire fueled by a deep understanding of not just Hip-Hop, but also the Jazz and R&B influences that have surrounded his family since his youth.

We’ll meet near the original city shoreline where gold miners and the liquor to supply them were unloaded from ships. We’ll talk about bars inside of boats, cocktail muddlers made of gold, and the opulent saloons of the late 1800s. We’ll walk to the site of SF’s first famous drink, the Pisco Punch, and learn about its suspected secret ingredient. In the original red light district, we’ll discuss the great earthquake and fire of 1906 that destroyed almost all of the city and copies of its most famous bartender’s cocktail book. We’ll discuss how Prohibition did and did not impact the quantity of alcohol consumed, though the quality may have suffered. We’ll walk the strip where the post-war boom brought sailors seeking sin, and talk about the birth of tiki and Trader Vic’s Mai Tai. We’ll end our tour in a stunning 1907 saloon that still serves some of the best drinks in town and share a small cocktail in celebration of our journey.
