New SF Venue ‘Smash Room’ Lets You Sledgehammer Objects For Fun

There’s a new recreational space that just opened in San Francisco, and it looks like a smashing success. When you’ve that special rage or anger that can only be calmed by taking a sledgehammer to old television sets, fax machines, and automobile windshields, a new spot called Smash Room just opened at 1005 Market Street (at Sixth Street.)

Over at the Bold Italic, reviewer Brandy Collins describes the experience as such: “Once waivers were signed, my friends and I were adorned in a uniform for the destruction of fitted gloves, safety glasses, and hard hats. In the room awaiting us were 30 dishes, a car windshield, an old fax machine, dresser drawers, and a computer monitor. The exhilaration of taking a sledgehammer to the fax machine, reminiscent of the movie Office Space, is made very real for anyone immersed deeply in office culture.”
She adds that “To make the experience as personal as possible it’s suggested to bring in your own items for destroying. For something truly cathartic, [owner Miguel] Moises recommends photos or objects of your exes.”
What is a #smashroom and why is it so fun?
A place that you can release any aggressions on bottles, dishes, glassware, electronics, Televisions and more! Choose from a hammer, baseball bat, golf club crowbar… Make a mess & walk away 😁#BreakiT, Suite 460 at @OutletsofMS pic.twitter.com/onxuIMaD7L— Outlets of MS (@OutletsofMS) October 7, 2021
There was already a Smash Room in Fairfields, CA, but the San Francisco Smash Room opened October 1. They also have them in a few other cities at axe-throwing ranges, or at dedicated spots with named like Break Room, but it’s about time San Francisco broke the smash ceiling and got one of their own.

This business’s San Francisco location is running out of the basement of a building with a large number of residential tenants, including shift workers, disabled people, seniors, and people who need quiet to work out of their units. It’s anxiety inducing as it shakes the building at random hours of the day and night, making the problem inescapable to tenants trying to work or rest, even with earplugs in. The residential tenants can feel the shaking and thuds multiple floors above this business and were not notified before this business moved in. These are rent controlled units and based on history the landlord allowing such activity suggests this may be a passive way to “encourage” the tenants to leave. This business is not in an appropriate place, and the business owner is currently offering rentals that start well beyond quiet hours on weekdays.
If this is something you would not appreciate happening in your own residence, I strongly encourage you to seek your entertainment at a different business or use their Pleasanton location where you will not be disturbing residents.
Also keep in mind that this business is operating below the radar here in San Francisco (it’s clear there has been no legal consulting that went into opening this rage room) and so if you or someone in your party are injured during your activities it’s likely you will be SOL.
