Comedy Day in Golden Gate Park — 5 hours of FREE SHOWS!
Comedy shows are expensive. They’re almost not worth it in my opinion. Say you shell out $25 for a ticket to Cobb’s or the Punch Line, and you’re planning on having a great time. But then comes the drink minimum, which, for an average beer [we’re talking Bud here], its going to cost you at least $5-6 for each drink. Then you want food after you start drinking, which is even more cash. You’re looking at a $50 venture here — something that, even if the person is drop dead funny, I can make just as many jokes amuse myself at home for free.
If you’re like me and love to laugh for change, or even for free, Comedy Day in Golden Gate Park today will make sure your wallet won’t get raped for a belly laugh or 3. Though the list is mainly comprised of local talent, apparently Tom Ammiano is going to take a shot at the mike. That, in and of itself, is worth an afternoon walk to Golden Gate Park. Just don’t forget the tomatoes.

FYI, there are some awesome comedy venues in SF that you don’t have to pay a ridiculous amount for, plus a drink minimum. (biased report time)
I work at The Dark Room Theater, where at least two days a week, and usually four, there are amazing comics performing for 5-15 bucks, no drink minimum, AND you can brown bag it, thereby even more cheapifying your drinking experience (1.99 40oz.s from the liquor store? sold)
Comics I saw last night:
Dave Tomasan, Kris Tinkle, Brent Weinbach, Jesse Fernandez. Also this recently I’ve seen Emily Heller, Bucky Sinister, Alex Koll, Sean Keane and Chris Garcia.
the website’s http://darkroomsf.com/, it’s 2263 Mission St. at 19th st, and yes, I work there. However, I hung out there and enjoyed cheap shows (in addition to stand up and sketch, there are awesome plays and music shows and this Bad Movie Night thing like Mystery Science Theater 300, but with comedians instead of robots) so I’m at least a tried and true opinion, even if I’ve come to love the place like my own house would be if I had a theater in it.
Tom Ammiano’s been a regular part of Comedy Day in Golden Gate Park since forever and was doing stand-up here when most of the “local talent” was still in high-school.
